Witness, Express and Represent

A workshop for writers and theatre makers of every level: from true beginner to established practitioner, working on witnessing our extraordinary time, expressing the experience of living now in the context of others, and representing these experiences through the eyes of people who are often ignored or distorted in mainstream media.

All are welcome, but especially people interested in writing that transcends racial and cultural clichés, that looks complexly at queer and trans experiences with nuance, and that addresses the current and ongoing expressions of people with HIV, and children and survivors of the epidemic. Our focus will be on the fundamentals of craft: narrative arc, Point of View, and Place.

Sarah Schulman is a novelist, playwright, nonfiction writer, screenwriter and AIDS historian.  Her 19 books include the recently published novel THE COSMOPOLITANS, selected by Publishers Weekly as one of the best American novels of 2016, the nonfiction CONFLICT IS NOT ABUSE, winner of the Publishing Triangle Nonfiction Prize, now in its fifth printing, and the forthcoming murder mystery novel MAGGIE TERRY, which will be published by The Feminist Press in September 2018. Sarah is on the advisory board of Jewish Voice for Peace, is student advisor to Students For Justice In Palestine, and is on the advisory board of Claudia Rankine’s Racial Imaginary Institute. She is Distinguished Professor at The City University of New York, College of Staten Island. Current projects include: THE SNOW QUEEN, a staged musical collaboration with the great Marianne Faithful.

Workshop details

This workshop takes place over three days in DanceHouse and we ask that participants are available for the full duration of the workshop.

Tuesday 13 March 10:00 – 17:00
Wednesday 14 March 10:00 – 12:00

There is a cost of €30 for the workshop (this includes lunches on Monday and Tuesday workshop days).

How to apply

Participation in this workshop is by application only. Applications open on Wednesday 7 February and close at 5pm Monday 19 February.
Places will be offered to successful applicants on Wednesday 21 February.
